LA JOLLA — A crew from San Diego Gas and Electric worked around the clock yesterday to fix the malfunctioning sign of a popular La Jolla liquor store.
The SDGE crew was summoned by the La Jolla Police Department after they received dozens of phone calls from those either offended or amused by the sign’s glitch.
While the brave SDGE crew worked tirelessly throughout the night to restore full power to the sign, LJPD officers blocked off entrances to Pearl Street, which prevented both smokers and alcoholics from getting to the store.
At 7am this morning, after working on the sign for 11 straight hours, the SDGE workers proved to be victorious.
“We are happy to announce that the sign is now fully operational,” declared SDGE worker Lance Cordrey. “At least we think it’s working … it’s hard to tell now that there’s daylight,” he added.
Upon hearing this news, the crowd — which had gathered around the police barricade on Pearl Street — began to cheer for the SDGE crew.
“These SDGE workers are heroes!” shouted one alcoholic.
The fearless and honorable SDGE team was led by Captain Lenny “Fuzzy” Fuzberger, a 58-year-old company veteran. This afternoon, Captain Fuzberger and his team were honored by San Diego Mayor Walter Flannagan for their heroic work.
“Captain Fuzberger and his crew worked vigorously to fix the “S” in the Dick’s Liquor sign, so citizens like you and me could once again purchase booze, cigarettes, and nudie magazines in peace,” said an emotional Mayor Flannagan, who wept while giving his speech.
The SDGE crew is currently in discussions with Random House Publishing about a potential book deal, and will appear on Larry King Live next week.
Having witnessed the amount of effort involved in fixing the sign, Dick’s Liquor owner Dick Perry reflectively declared, “If my sign fails like this again, I’m just going to let it be and move the store to Hillcrest.”

My office is three blocks from there. I chuckle every time I see the sign.
Hell, leave the S out. Keep things interesting.
