Wild Animal Park Gets Four New Exhibits

by staff on March 4, 2009

As a Diamond Member of the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, there’s nothing I look forward to more than the announcement of new animal exhibits.  So you could probably imagine my excitement when I opened this month’s issue of Zoonooz Magazine and learned that the Wild Animal Park is now featuring four new animal stations. As I read the news, I was so overcome with joy that I put the magazine down, flushed, then immediately sent an email to my boss saying I’d be out sick the next day.

I arrived at the Wild Animal Park bright and early the following morning.  The first new exhibit I explored was “The Zebra Den,” which features rare African zebras.  It’s amazing that they let you get so close and watch the caretakers groom the zebras.  The park will even let you ride the zebras after 12:00pm.

The next new exhibit I visited was an adorable bobcat, who was rescued from the backyard of a foreclosed home in Temecula.

The bobcat is such a magnificent creature, unlike anything I’ve ever seen.  I must have used at least two rolls of film on this animal alone.

Just when I thought the experience couldn’t get any better, the new “Cougar Corner” took things up a notch.  It features wild cougars brought over from the hills of Los Angeles.

The cougars looked pretty antsy.  The Park Ranger notified the crowd that it’s mating season for the cougars, and warned all males ages 18 to 29 to stay at least 10 feet away from the fence.

The fourth and final exhibit on my trip was the new “Dangerous Predator Lair.”  The ranger informed the crowd that the Wild Animal Park has become a refuge for predators, since they have been recently added to the endangered list.

predators“Because of a poacher named Chris Hansen, the predator population has dwindled significantly in recent years,” he explained.

“To keep the species going we’ve tried to encourage the cougars and the predators to mate with each other … but unfortunately, they both prefer teenage men.”

All in all, it was an awesome trip, and a nice break from the office.  I can’t wait to put my stuffed cougar doll (that I got from the souvenir shop) inside my cubicle.

I was able to get REAL close to the Cougers, even leaned way over the fence.. They didn’t even pay attention to me. Maybe it’s because I’m a 67 year old male. Shucks,…next time I’ll bring some phremones..

Bought a stuffed animal? I bet you hopped the fence! Those Cougars are fine specimens. My favorite part is when they let the bobcat ride the zebra. It was like an exotic rodeo!
